National Trust - Cragside
Cragside, a National Trust property near Rothbury Northumberland was the home of Victoriam engineering magnate Sir William Armstrong.
Armstrong purchased the barren moorland and built Cragside in two main stages in the late 1800's, planting over seven million trees and shrubs. An engineer at heart, Armstrong constructed a hydroelectric power plant fed from a man made lake on the hillside above the house. Cragside was the first home in the world to be powered by green electricity using the then new Joseph Swann's electric light bulbs.
